* * *

As the carriage rolled away and Mrs. Bennet completed the obligatory farewells to their hosts through the window, she turned to Jane, her face a mask of indignant anger. “Jane Rosamond Bennet, I am aghast! I daresay that Mr. Bennet will be entirely vexed when I tell him of your outburst this evening, what were you thinking, talking back to Lady Lucas in that manner?” Jane felt her cheeks grow hot, and as Lydia and Kitty’s eyes grew wider, she knew that this was not the place for the conversation Mrs. Bennet wanted to have.

“I am sorry, Mama. I have not been feeling like myself of late. I did apologize to Lady Lucas...”

“Oh yes, very prettily too, but you will do it again. You may be two and twenty years old, but you are not yet to grand for me to scold. You acted very ill, very ill indeed. I would expect this kind of behavior from Lydia or Kitty, or even Mary... but never you. I am most disappointed.” Jane looked out the window, not knowing what to say. She was sure that her mother was expecting another apology, but she could not muster the energy for it.

“What did she say, Mama? Oh, do please tell us.” Lydia’s pleading did not make matters any better.

“No, Lydia, I dare not speak it again! It is all entirely too shocking. I shall be speaking with Mr. Bennet as soon as we arrive, and I will ask him what means of punishment he thinks best. At the very least I will demand that you visit Lady Lucas and apologize again.” Lydia giggled and whispered something into Kitty’s ear, and the two of them fell to whispering together as the carriage bounced homeward. Jane stared out the window, trying to ignore Mrs. Bennet’s occasional furious exhalations and pointed remarks.

“And in front of all of those ladies too! Shocking.” Jane looked over at Elizabeth, who, though equally as confused as Lydia and Kitty as to what had been said, had a look of amusement on her face. Mrs. Bennet’s tantrums and histrionics were borne as a badge of honor, and Elizabeth had caused her mother a fair few attacks of nerves. This was Jane’s first time as the cause of maternal distress, and it was clear that Elizabeth was enjoying the result. Jane looked down at her hands. If this was Mrs. Bennet’s reaction to something to small as sharing her opinion... whatever would her mother’s reaction be to the news she was trying so desperately to keep a secret?

Jane leaned back against the cushioned seat and closed her eyes. Once they were back at Longbourn, she could set her plan in motion, and in a few weeks’ time, everything would be different.
